ANNULMENTS

What is an annulment?

There are both religious and legal annulments of a marriage.

Legal annulments refer to marriages that took place but are no longer recognized by the courts. The courts declare that the marriage was never valid in the first place and should not be recognized according to Illinois law. This is different from a divorce. A divorce ends an existing legal marriage.

The legal term for an annulment in Illinois is a declaration of invalidity of marriage. There are several reasons Illinois allows a marriage to be annulled.
